Reflections on the Nature of the Real - 2

Growing Pains

The number of controversies flying across India in large part can be termed ‘growing pains’: the need to accommodate the diversity that is India with the obligation to unify this diversity, particularly with regard to the compulsions of a planetary society. Language is usually central to these controversies and English is a primary target. Of course it is a ‘fall out’ of the British Raj, but is it not a fact that English has displaced French as the international ‘link’ language? French dominated while monarchies ruled; it was then the language of aristocrats. English is dominant today at a time when the people’s voice is heard, on the international stage. This was facilitated by colonisation which affected the entire populace and not merely an elite. And is it not a fact that most if not all of the technological and scientific publications are written in English? To abolish English in such a scenario would be a case of cutting one’s nose to spite one’s face. In a country as diverse as India, where that diversity manifests primarily through languages, what will the ultimate solution be?
There is another way of looking at the issue: India is privileged to have been given a jump-start with English, a language that in the future would displace French in international relations. But that advantage Providence has bequeathed is being contested. The desire to eliminate and replace English with Hindi, for example, has been again fiercely opposed by the southern states in particular.
For decades since Independence and the removal of the Raj the nation has sought a replacement to counter the constant reminder of subjugation in the eyes of many. One has to question in the same manner why cricket, a pre-eminently Raj sport, has appropriated centre stage, not allowing other international sports to flourish. Yet, no one protests against the dominance of cricket to the detriment of all other sports, when at the Olympic Games every four years we are reminded of the imbalance. The Commonwealth Games have recently been concluded. India did well, unlike at the international venue not limited to former colonies. Does India require some more time to spread her wings and fly beyond such self-imposed boundaries? Cricket is cherished when it is a product par excellence of British rule, similar to English. What is the difference? To add weight to my argument, today it is played exclusively in once-colonised nations and has never been able to extend its influence beyond. No one complains, no one sees this as a sort of umbilical cord. On the other hand, the language inherited from colonial rule has allowed India to move into an international role that was not the result of British imperialism alone but is part of the workings of the Time-Spirit which has used this imperialism to globalise the world. French dominated while monarchies dominated the international stage; it was a symbol of the Old World, the language of the aristocrats. English is dominant today as the people’s voice becomes an international phenomenon through the wide-reaching democratic process.
Internally a solution has to be found to the language conundrum. But is Hindi the answer, being easily seen as an imposition of the North over the South? This too is a relic from colonial times: the well-known divide-and-rule strategy of imperial Britain successfully used the world’s most ancient Scripture to cement this north/south divide in the nation; along with the idea that the subcontinent was devoid of anything that could be considered an advanced civilisation. In other words, Bharat was a geographic void which therefore could be ‘filled’ by the strongest contender – i.e. the British. There was hardly any effective protest for over a century. Finally, in the early part of the last century, Sri Aurobindo voiced a protest and penned the unique The Secret of the Veda so that the hidden regions the Veda itself brings to our attention could be understood for what they are and not as most Indologists concluded. The Riks speak of the realms accessed only by the Immortal Ones, the ancients who had undertaken the same journey that is open to seekers on the subcontinent and throughout the world – no boundaries, no proprietorship, no monopoly because the ‘language’ employed is universal. It is not English or Sanskrit. It is the Cosmic Script, the same today as thousands of years ago. This is universalism, so well put in the Sanskrit vasudhaivam kutumbakam.
In the meantime we realise that the cosmic language is embedded in the human soul, but how many are in touch with that hidden dimension of consciousness? The British through English left their stamp on the world and successfully displaced French as international link language. The subcontinent is to leave the cosmic script as the new ‘link’ of a planetary society. However, this is not learned in universities anywhere on the globe.
Finally we have reached the core of the problem. Has India left evidence of this universalism which every true Indian intuitively knows lies at the root of nationhood? We feel proud of the unbroken link with the past, particularly demonstrated in the place the Rig and other Vedas hold in contemporary Hindu society. But we must also acknowledge that no one understands the language of the Veda. I do not refer to Sanskrit, please note; that is the external dress the Sanatana Dharma clothes herself in for this cosmic cycle of many thousands of years. It wore another dress during other turns of the cosmic wheel. What the Rig Veda holds as its most cherished rahasya is that abiding Truth that today may even use English to clothe itself and hide its everlasting beauty that is only unveiled to those highest of souls.

In the news today we learn of a comment made by a learned former Justice of the Supreme Court of India. He emphatically states that the national Epics are ‘fiction’ – his precise word as reported in the news. In several of my publications I have disclosed that the language of the Epics is cosmic entirely (see Kashmir and the Convergence of Time and Destiny and The Secrets of the Earth, Aeon Books), and certainly they can never be termed fiction as we understand the word today, except by those who have been so thoroughly influenced by the legacy of the Raj that the channel of the cosmic script has become even more heavily covered over by a rationalism that denies what India holds most sacred: the Soul.
I have demonstrated that the tale the Epics tell is simply the ‘history’ as recorded in the cosmos and can be deciphered today as in the distant past and well into the future. The only prerequisite is to acknowledge its existence and to open oneself to the true history wise men and women of the subcontinent have known from time immemorial. This is what India is unveiling today.
Humility is also a prerequisite. Those in positions of authority must cultivate this quality above all others. Sobriety is another – the clarity of vision to distinguish what is temporal, though of value in its own day, and what is the eternally abiding Truth. Does it really matter who first made the discovery of certain mathematical and geometric formulas, when sight of that Eternal Truth has been lost, when the Epics can be cavalierly labelled fictitious, though they are factually the repositories of that Truth? Pride in one’s past achievements is certainly important and must be accurately conveyed to students, but within the context of India’s everlasting heritage.
A new cosmology is the need of the hour. The philosopher Ervin Laszlo has echoed this need in his book, The Creative Cosmos, a Unified Science of Matter, Life and Mind. He writes

The next paradigm shift will be by nature transdisciplinary – it will be a cosmological revolution in the classical sense in which cosmology has always been the science of the whole of reality (kosmos, after all means ‘ordered whole’ in classical Greek). (Floris Books, 1993.)

It is this ‘language’ that the true emanation of Vishnu brings to the Earth yuge-yuge, re-clothed as each new age requires, but ever voicing that abiding, underlying Truth. Or, as Laszlo describes, the aim of his study is

To shed light on the dynamics by which universal fields interactively create the evolving cosmos, producing the diverse yet consistent orders that meet our eye… (Ibid, p.27)

Certainly the cosmology of the New Way fulfils Ervin Laszlo’s aspirations, but one has to question whether or not he can set aside his academic conditioning and recognise its newness; precisely for this fact it has no parallel and must be evaluated on its own terms, based only on the material presented before the enquirer in the numerous publications of Aeon Centre of Cosmology/Aeon Books. This will come to pass, today, tomorrow – or perhaps this is immaterial; because we do note that since the beginning of this year in particular, there is an acceleration in evidence of the evolution of consciousness across the globe. This is particularly evident in the youth, abroad and in India. To be noted in this regard is the thoughtful article of Tufail Ahmed, entitled Herald of a New India, which appeared in The New Indian Express, 13.8.2014. It is available online as well. The author stresses the fact that India is expressing a timeless tradition now clothed in the new scripture which is her Constitution – as is certainly a befitting adornment in this Aquarian Age.
And this brings me to a controversy created by another sitting Justice. He declared that the Bhagavad Gita should be taught in schools from the first grade itself.
Howling and gnashing of teeth across the land!
All the other holy books would have to be taught, the demand was.
But surely it is a self-evident truth that the Gita speaks to us of things Indian, that bear a relation to India today as in the past, that is native to this sacred land, as sacred as is the Ganga because both are born in the subcontinent and bear a relevance that no other holy book can equal. If Indonesia does not have a problem with the Ramayana as national epic, though the country is predominantly Islamic, one has to ask what bedevils India that she feels obliged to diminish her millennia-old culture born of this sacred bhoomi, just to prove her secular credentials.
Finally, not only is a new cosmology needed, it is a cosmology that is Indo-Centric.

Contraction, the Zero and the Speed of Consciousness - Part II

7.4.2012

12:04 PM

I am really just beginning to grasp the importance of what is happening. Now I truly feel I have the new paradigm. How to bring this to the world?  Honestly, I see no point in having received this light if it must remain occulted. What would be the point? In what way would that help to change the trend of destruction the world is on? And what good is the Avataric descent if its light must remain hidden? Yes, there is an occult action occurring with each such act of seeing. But at a certain point we must reach a threshold, like now, when the plant pushes up above the ground and becomes visible.
... I do feel that the Formula in its application is complete. I feel that just yesterday a crucial element was unveiled precisely for application. It had been withheld until now. Why? Surely it was waiting for this critical moment, this crossroads of destiny.
I know physics stands on the brink of a complete collapse. One little nudge is all that is needed. But are we to wait for three decades like cold fusion before its collapse and the real Formula is known? Do we have the luxury of so much time?

Dark energy or matter is not to be uncovered as we would in ordinary circumstances. This is a property of the Zero. It is ‘dark’ because like the compacted Sound in the Zero, which we cannot hear, we cannot ‘see’ this energy – which is actually not an energy at all. It is an all-pervading cosmic direction or alignment. It ‘holds’ by virtue of this contracting direction in counterbalancing the expansion on this side. Clearly the wrong tools are used in measuring because they do not know what it is exactly. And they apply the laws of physics which hold for the One and its expansion. But this is beyond that, beyond those laws. It is the origin of gravity on this side. And certainly gravity is the force that resists integration. It must because its own root or origin on the other side is unknown. To understand the origin of the gravitational force we must know Time. That knowledge lies ‘on the other side’ – hence it eludes the physicist.
Time is ‘measured’ on this side through the process of birth measurable by the calendar which is a faithful reproduction of the harmonies of our solar system. The December Solstice is the doorway to ‘the other side’ when perihelion occurs and there can be contraction to a point; hence in all advanced cultures it was given prominence, like the temple in Karnak, Egypt, when the Sun rises on the December Solstice exactly between two pillars/walls. How exquisitely the passage to the other side is portrayed.
A calendar like the current one used by Hindus completely distorts the experience. According to the Nirayana astrologers that sunrise would be measured 23 days AFTER the event, and of course the synchronisation would fail.
OM, like the raga/Shruti, also provides the correct understanding of the origin of things. And the three stages of contraction (in the primordial vibration) leading to a Zero/One fourth. So accurate, yet so unproductive in this science-maddened society that has lost all touch with its ancient wisdom.
Thus, the harmony of our solar system, and the Earth’s contribution to the composition, is the display of what lies beyond. Our solar system is unique because it faithfully transcribes in space the grand harmony of the other side. And the contribution of the Earth is to offer the key through the December Solstice of the portal that can carry us beyond. Not to heaven or hell, or into the extra-cosmic, but rather into the deepest dimension of our material reality. We are contracted to a ‘point’ in the deepest recesses of the soul where we experience the very same 9, 6, 3 – or Transcendent, Cosmic/Universal, Individual. Only birth on Earth allows us to do so because the soul is the special attribute of this third planet. We can make of our sojourn an Underworld where the Dark Lord Pluto reigns; or we can, thanks to the supramental Truth-Consciousness, bring what lies in the core of ourselves to the surface and then to establish life on Earth according to those triadic principles of the New Way Formula. The Vishnu Avatar comes for this: to open the way by his birth and death and connected rebirth for this foundational experience.

23.15 PM

The embellishment continues on the theme of the ‘cosmological constant’.
I understand the difference between this side and the ‘other’ and why Number is used differently here and there. In the other the issue is essentiality of Being. Therefore whole numbers are used as the measure and the system used is the mathematics of unity. We apply the same system on this side by reducing sums to a ‘seed digit’ in order to arrive at the essentiality.  It is the way we connect to the ‘other side’.
The proof of the system, on this side, is reached through application of the Formula 9, 6, 3, 0-1. This is done by following a series of births equalling those essential numbers. The avataric emanations of Vishnu take birth according to that harmony because they serve as the bridge to the ‘other side’. Without their births we have no non-speculative proof of that essentiality or the bridge linking Essence to Form of this material universe. [See The New Way, Vols. 1, 2, 3. Aeon Books]
The number system universally in use is superbly suited to bringing the highest truth within the easy grasp of humanity. The Zero is of course the prime innovation. When that was ‘seen’ (in India) that seed was planted and the manifestation of Supermind was inevitable. The Zero, like the Shruti, holds the key.
On the ‘other side’ whole tones (in a sequence of triadic quanta) describe accurately the Essence which is carried over to this side in the manifestation of the universe. There is really no separation between the two – essence or essentiality and form, or a creation in matter. We ‘see’ only the latter; the sage ‘sees’ essence or originator and then upholder of Form without division.
So, to discover essential Being in this material creation we reduce sums to their seed digits. That then tells us the Note that resonates through the object or person. But the single-most important aspect of the New Way is the Solar Line. This is how we prove that this harmony, the magnificence of the Formula, originates on ‘the other side’. Without the existence of the Line, falling within the structure of the Formula, or striking these whole tones on this side, in the expansion of that essential Being, there could be no proof of the accuracy of the new cosmology. We do not require complicated mathematics to understand.  We ‘see in understanding’ because we realise the function of the Vishnu Avatars’ periodic appearances to be the proof. With that key alone the proof is presented. Supermind not only creates its own conditions of manifestation, it provides its own proof through the simple understanding of the oneness of 0 and 9.
We ‘see’ the Zero as the womb of that essentiality of Being. We ‘see’ that very same essentiality extended in the universe from that Zero via the reversal that carries the vertical into and through the horizontal. We ‘see’ the Zero as rest, the 9 as motion – but rest born of compaction; and motion born of extension. We ‘see’ both directions as simultaneous features of our universal manifestation – one without the other is separative and delusional. The void, the nothingness, the static peace all describe incomplete perceptions which when the full Truth-Consciousness is unveiled, when the lid of the Sun is finally removed, constitute the Falsehood. They prolong the reign of the Ignorance and the Lord of Death.
That India lies at the centre of the Age of Supermind cannot be doubted. Her role was revealed when the sage first ‘saw’ the Zero. With that, Fullness was ‘seen’ as the womb of creation. The reign of the Void had come to an end in that flash of Seeing. For the rest the 9, on the power of Time, gestated that new creation whose birth occurred in this 9th Manifestation.
The entire drama is explained by the analogy of music: Over there the 9 notes exist as (triadic quanta) whole tones. In that essentiality they are like pulsations – indeed the pulsations of the Sun, 9 in our 24-hour day. The Sun carries this harmonic pulsation into and through its planetary body. But only the Earth, third in the system, is equipped with the mechanism to render the tones/pulsations struck on the other side audible, measurable. After the reversal, because of movement harmonies are possible based on the 9 ‘tones’. The Zero never ceases to be the upholding Womb – even as its tones/pulsations expand in a ceaseless display of Harmony.
Only in the classical music of India of the Carnatic tradition do we find the most faithful expression of the Supreme Truth. Only in Carnatic music of India can we ‘hear’ the oneness of Essence and Form.

5.1.13

Contraction, the Zero and the Speed of Consciousness

From the December Solstice to approximately January 5th –  or 0  to 15th degree Capricorn – Thea introspects. She reviews the year that has passed and prepares for the one that opens after these days ‘out of the calendar’ have passed – the five days over the 360 of the complete zodiacal/calendrical circle, days which the Ancients always considered especially important as a ‘seeding’ period. In the New Way this period completes a cosmological process that  embraces the last three months of the closing year, leading to this Seeding (of Time). One truly plants a ‘seed’ in Time, the power that from the December Solstice onward can carry it to fruition over the months that follow.
This year the Seeding was undertaken by a reading of certain important journal entries, those that marked especially significant turning points in her cosmological work of the past year. One was the revolutionising vision of the nature of Contraction – in our material world this is experienced as gravity. With that yogic breakthrough, the formulation of the new cosmology was completed by this cosmological constant which is the basis of a new paradigm.
As a tribute to the 2012 that we leave behind, with its share of near apocalyptic episodes such as Hurricane Sandy as well as the turmoil across the world in so many walks of life that affect the common people, we see just how the Aquarian Wave is transforming life on this planet. The entire world is marching toward a great Unknown, understandably with a certain amount of trepidation. It is therefore timely to present a series of excerpts from Thea’s journal where she records her yogic experiences to demonstrate that while the world seems poised for catastrophe or collapse of some sort, be this in the political, economic, or social sphere, there is another work going on which indicates that the new world Sri Aurobindo announced is in preparation. The new paradigm beyond science and spirituality – both examples of the old creation that is being surpassed – is solidly taking shape and will soon displace the old models on which a world in collapse had been built.
The New Way promises a future that would seem unrelated to what the human being has known until now. Everything we know and have cherished is being carried away on the Aquarian Wave, while at the same time the new is introduced. There is never a void: one leaves as the other fills the space – but this time with foundations that can support a true new world order of justice, of benevolence, of compassion and of love.  (5 January 2013)

Thea’s Journal
6.4.2012

I have finally seen something that I have been missing since the beginning – contraction and expansion are indeed simultaneous. This was a most accurate perception. But they are not happening here at the same time. Contraction is a property of the Zero, not the One. This has been my mistake, and it is a serious one. Contraction is on the other side; and it is constant. It is that cosmological constant Einstein finally disowned. He had the right perception but since laws of physics and mathematics break down in the singularity, he could not ‘prove’ the point. Indeed, he had always to deal with the Point. He could not even conceive of the Zero. Therein unity holds – i.e., the mathematics of unity. There number IS, whole and complete in itself. Physics, math as we know them cannot explain – much less prove – the elegant simplicity of that Unity. Whole numbers, as number-powers, alone ‘explain’ reality.
The zero/contraction is what holds the universe together. It is the binding force – the eternal Centre. Without that there is no universe at all. And those number-powers encapsulate the Transcendent, the Cosmic, the Individual/soul. These are the triadic principles of all creation, of each created thing. These principles through the 0/1 are at the root of our universal manifestation – they are the components of the individual soul, our vahana in this material creation of 9.
This is the magnificence of the 9 – the number-power of the Divine Mother as India has long understood...
Everything I have perceived is true. But now, 36 years after the most important breakthrough of the Avataric Descent, the final ingredient has come, which has eluded me all along. Yes, contraction and expansion are indeed simultaneous. But I could not formulate accurately and completely how this simultaneity is experienced – factually – in the universe. Now it has come 36 years after the first Seeing. It has come.
On this side we experience expansion. It cannot be otherwise given Time’s ‘arrow’. But contraction is ever present here also. It is not that it ceases at the threshold and expansion takes over. Indian music expresses it perfectly: the Shruti never ceases. It upholds the expansion of Sound that arises from the Silence – silence to us because it is on the other side of our material threshold. Therefore to our senses it appears as Silence. But really it is sound compacted – all sound in seed. We have no faculty to ‘hear’ sound compacted. And this is the marvel and the beauty and the grace of a material manifestation. And more particularly of our Earthly evolution. Here, perhaps unique in the universe, we can see and hear along with the Supreme. To see, to hear his own essence the Supreme requires a creation of the 9. Otherwise IT just IS. But IT cannot know that Is-ness. It is therefore impoverished, incomplete, diminished – unembellished.
Like the raga that compacted Silence experiences itself as embellishment, raga, melody. Therefore there can be an infinite number of ragas because everything is contained in the Zero. That is why nothingness is the falsehood supreme. Only Fullness describes the true reality of our world.
This is a glorious day. The Christians celebrate it as the death of the Son Crucified. They have not gone far enough. They have not seen the Son Victorious. Only India has...
It is curious how this tiny missing piece, just a more finely adjusted, focussed lens can make all the difference in the world. Now perception is whole and sound, and indestructible.
Everything was correct all along: the One is that Fourth of the Solar Line where reversal takes place. Indeed – contraction and expansion, vertical to horizontal. It has all been true, been seen for the past 40 years, but this small element can make all the difference in the world. It alone is victory – the Victory that ever IS.
Yes, the Becoming is the most blessed component of Reality because it allows the Absolute to see and to know his essential Being. Therefore Being and Becoming too are simultaneous because it is that Being that extends, and in the extension of Itself, knows and sees, and experiences Itself.
Einstein caught the tail of it, but the limitations of his discipline would not permit him to ‘cross the threshold’ to the other side. Indeed, that discipline broke down and he had to retreat, calling his cosmological constant the ‘biggest blunder of his life’. Whereas, all he had to do was to take the plunge and discover the essential and complete nature of Reality. But he was trapped by the limitations of his dis-cipline, trapped in the Becoming alone ignoring the oneness of Being and Becoming, of the 0 and the 9.
Today April 6 we reach the bottom of the Core’s Pedestal [of the Mother’s original design] – the point of the Return, of the reversal from the vertical of the descending Ray to the horizontal base of the Mother’s symbol. Truly the inner chamber holds all the secrets of the future realisation. And the future today becomes the present – if we but see.
This is the secret of Oneness. Indeed all is one – there and here. The separation exists only in our limitations, our divisiveness. We must SEE and LIVE that Oneness. In it lies the key to salvation.

1:34 PM

Already I am feeling a sort of shift after this morning’s seeing. Somehow this little piece of the puzzle or mosaic had been withheld. I am not foolish enough to believe that all this, especially this breakthrough, depends on me. It is the Divine Grace – indeed Jupiter in this Jupiter year [2012=5=Jupiter’s orbit] we have entered. Its presence has kicked in after the Equinox. Now 36 years after that wonderful birth of the New Way, the final piece has been set in place...
...It is so clear: Einstein’s cosmological constant. So clear. Of course he saw it as a blunder because he could not use the speed of consciousness to cross the threshold via contraction. That’s the key: contraction to a point where maximum speed in this material universe is reached.
The speed of light as constant condemned us to this material universe and kept us from the experience of Oneness. Light is part of this universe of 9, so light speed as constant meant that we always had to function in the One disconnected from the Zero. When the speed of consciousness replaces light as constant, only then can that threshold be breached because we are not confined to expansion, extension of the One. We do penetrate that Zero, just as The Magical Carousel (Chapter 9) describes so beautifully. We have to penetrate the Point right within ourselves. That is the only way. We cannot extend our vision into the past as astronomers and physicists do. In the Point we have Simultaneous Time – time in the seed of itself. Our grace is to be able to experience that essence as it evolves in this material creation of 9 and thereby know the Transcendent, Cosmic and Individual Divine as within our very being, not out and beyond.
What a falsehood spirituality of the Age of Pisces has been. Only Supermind can describe the true Reality....

On the nature of Disease and Cure - Part V

By Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet

  28 July 2006

We left off this discussion by focussing on the role the play of circumstances may exert to bring to the surface the core of an illness or physical disturbance. Certainly the most significant aid in any healing process would have to be the discovery of the central ‘knot’ of a disease. And because the physical is the vessel containing all the less dense layers that constitute our total being, we realise that it is often a complicated task to uncover this nucleus, or the illness’s DNA, as it were. But unless we do, only temporary relief may come about such as medication provides; usually the problem returns, often with renewed vigour.
After a lapse of many years, initially what drew my attention back to the art of healing several months ago was my concern for a person of very high spiritual attainments whom I greatly respect. I felt that his constant physical distress was impeding him from a full dedication to his mission, given the continuous demands his numerous physical problems imposed; the point was reached where surgical intervention had become necessary. But according to the subject’s own conclusion, these interventions did not bear the positive results medical science promised. Having reached a more advanced age, these constant lapses were cause of serious concern.
I was struck by the fact that the diagnoses which had led to a certain medication or surgery did not uncover the nature of the actual disease or malfunction. Finally the point arrived where the subject himself came up with a different version of the location of the problem: he felt the doctors might have missed the point entirely. From my perspective, this was an invitation to an entirely different approach. And so, with the subject’s photograph at my side day and night, I began my usual concentration sessions whenever time permitted, in the manner I used to undertake many years ago.
The real nature of the problem, I felt initially, lay revealed in the diverse manifestations of the physical distress. There was improper functioning centred largely on the lower chakra; but, at least in my view, it was all notoriously imprecise. It was in fact this imprecision, or a sort of ‘floating’ quality, that caused me to reflect that the doctors treating the subject over the years, and he himself, were not fully aware of what the problem was. No one seemed to have located the real cause, and hence treatment seemed as imprecise as the illnesses.
In this light, my concentrations were aimed at organising the total field of the problem so that the play of circumstances might provide the key; and this could then unlock the door to a process of true healing, whatever that would be.
My concentrations quickly brought results, though initially the connection between the play of circumstances and the malaise were not at all evident. In fact, I assumed that there was no such connection at all. It went like this: On a sudden impulse I sent the subject the first part of the series ‘The Day of the White Peacock’, though I was not entirely sure why since he has been involved with my work only from its outer corridors in a sense, while that series covered intimate details meant largely for closer associates of the Mother, and knowledgeable of Sri Aurobindo’s mission as originally played out in the laboratories where their joint work had been established. It would have seemed that my impulse was farfetched and perhaps even inappropriate; whereas it was just the contrary. Sending the subject TDWP triggered his own revelation of the real factors behind his continuous physical disturbances.
Revelation came in the form of his reaction to my text and the problems I exposed in that series. He wrote to me that he had similarly been under attack from the orthodox of his school and line of work, as well as others who felt threatened by his teaching. He had even been targeted by a proficient witch doctor. This situation covered many years, but his attitude all along appears to have been simply to ignore them, as he wrote, ‘they run off’ like water on a duck’s back.
Reading these words I instantly knew what lay behind all his physical problems that were like constant companions throughout his life. I saw that while his mind could easily disengage itself from the intrusions and disturbances, his body had a very different story to tell. In other words, this was a case of a serious, long-standing disconnect.
I conveyed this to the subject, but there was no reply.
This indifference on his part was a sort of protective device. Our subject had been sent by his teacher to bring the message of his particular teaching to the West and to set up centres there. It was a pioneering mission. He was carefully selected for this task - that much was clear - since he seemed to be perfectly fashioned for success. But the mission, it seemed to me, was far more dangerous than perhaps originally imagined. It was complex and would involve hidden forces of a subtle nature, entrenched energies that might not take lightly to this ‘intruder’. Indeed, to carry out such a task without the consequences our subject encountered (though ignored by him), one would have to be an ‘impeccable warrior’ as it is known in traditions dating back to ancient times, which do not shun the world but which demand of practitioners that they carry on with their transformation right in its midst; indeed, often using that very incompatibility as a goading power for the inner work. But to do so successfully there would have to be a certain preparation, a protective mechanism which would allow the ‘warrior’ to remain unscathed through this most difficult engagement. I wondered if this had been the case with our subject. His physical condition seemed to indicate the contrary. I felt that he had been thrust into a big bad hostile world without adequate preparation and therefore left vulnerable.
Thus, he did carry out the sacred mission entrusted to him rather brilliantly; but his physical paid the price for a certain lack of ‘impeccability’, the need for which seemed to be ignored, or at least not adequately dealt with. This left our subject vulnerable in his subtle sheaths to ‘infiltration’ from hostile quarters; hence the ‘floating’ quality of the disturbances - because they were indeed volatile in nature, moving about well hidden in those less dense layers.
Apart from the clues I was receiving from the subject’s location in the Gnostic Circle by his age, one’s natal horoscope is often an aid to discover certain predispositions as described above. In our subject it was largely his Gemini rising which confirmed a mental poise or inclination that could be indicative of his ability to DIVIDE himself into these different parts where his mind could disconnect from his body easily. ‘Up there’ all was under control; but this left his body entirely vulnerable. What complicated matters even more was his highly evolved being, where a duality of any sort could hide itself well by the belief that, in his own words, he was above it all.
This Gemini factor might not have had any effect on his health had he led a ‘normal’ life, which was hardly the case for our subject. The nature of his mission alone placed demands on him of a more stringent order.
To illustrate, the caste system in India is very ancient. The very first indication of its existence comes to us in certain verses of the Rig Veda which connects the arrangement directly to the cosmic harmony. Tradition sustains that unlike what is commonly believed, or what may have been the state of affairs after a degeneration set in, the highest caste, the Brahmin, had certain sacred duties to perform for the community which demanded a life of great austerity. This not only involved prescriptions regarding material possessions and other such mundane matters, but an entire regime or life style, as we could call it today. The Brahmin had to perform certain functions for the civilisation which precluded the experiences an ordinary humanity takes in stride with no deleterious affects.
The same could be said for our subject, whose duties were indeed of a high order. These left him not only the target of constant attacks, often from quarters where the manipulation of subtle forces is a trade well known, but even just plain bad will that one encounters as a constant feature from life in a world governed by the Cosmic Ignorance such as ours. These too do take their toll.
We have the experiences of the Mother to testify to the above. She was indeed the target of such attacks. We have it on record from Sri Aurobindo himself that in 1938 he suffered an accident and broke his thigh bone precisely because he was ‘busy protecting the Mother’ during a period when hundreds of visitors poured into the Ashram for the quarterly-held Darshan; to protect her from the influx he had disregarded his own needs. There are a number references to attacks of this nature, finally requiring the intervention of experienced practitioners of occultism after Sri Aurobindo’s departure. This was the case in 1962 when the Mother almost succumbed to ‘black magic’. An experienced Tantra Yogi came to her aid; in the process he also noted that the attacks originated right in her Ashram from among her own disciples!
We can consider the Mother to have been an accomplished Divine Warrior and a supremely competent occultist; nonetheless, she was vulnerable. How much more would our subject have been considering that, for one, women are far more adept at dealing with matters occult and coping with such attacks than men. But in ignoring these realities he must live with these constant reminders of what he chooses to ignore.
